Industry veteran John Varley makes the move after more than 20 years at Delta

The California-based domestic airline Virgin America has selected industry veteran John Varley to fill the role
of senior vice president and general counsel. In addition to assuming the responsibilities of the airline’s top legal officer, he also oversees both the government affairs program and the company’s sustainability efforts.

Varley comes to Virgin America from Atlanta, Georgia-headquartered Delta Air Lines, where he most recently held the position of vice president and deputy general counsel. Although he spent more than 20 years at Delta, Varley is no stranger to his new company. In fact, during his tenure at Delta, he helped broker an alliance and frequent-flyer partnership between the two airlines.

He began his legal career in private practice, working as an associate attorney at a law firm in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his undergraduate degree in economics from Georgetown University and his law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law in Maryland.
