Society for Corporate Governance leader steps down

Christina Maguire joined the organization in January 2023

Christina Maguire is stepping down as president and CEO of the Society for Corporate Governance to ‘pursue other opportunities,’ according to the organization.

Maguire joined the society in January of this year. She had been managing director and global head of ESG, governance research and proxy voting with BNY Mellon in Boston from 2012 to November 2021, according to her LinkedIn profile. In that role, she oversaw policy, voting and operations functions for roughly $2 tn in assets at more than 12,000 issuers. Earlier in her career, she spent 15 years as director of investment proxy research at Fidelity Investments. She succeeded Darla Stuckey, who was scheduled to retire in April, at the society.

Maguire could not be reached immediately for comment.

The society has appointed Andrew Fitzsimons as interim president and CEO, effective immediately. Fitzsimons has been the organization’s COO since 2019. Doug Chia, senior fellow at the Rutgers Center for Corporate Law and Governance and a former chair of the society’s board, has been appointed strategic adviser to Fitzsimons to help with the transition and to advise on policy, governance and advocacy matters.

Keir Gumbs, chair of the society’s board and chief legal officer of Broadridge Financial Solutions, says in a statement: ‘The board is excited to have Andrew lead our organization during this time of growth and change in our industry. We are confident that the combination of his experience and significant operational capabilities, complemented by Doug’s deep knowledge of corporate governance and the organization, makes them the perfect pair to guide the society while our search process for a permanent CEO is underway. We remain committed to serving our growing national network of members and seeking to be a positive force for corporate governance excellence.

‘On behalf of the entire board, I want to thank Christina for her contributions and dedication to the society and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.’
