Nintendo general counsel steps down

Richard Flamm, senior vice president and general counsel announced that he will be stepping down from his position this spring.

Flamm has been with the company for 19 years and served more than 12 years as its general counsel. He was promoted to general counsel in 1999.

The seasoned lawyer was hired to head up the Japanese company’s legal team and was later nabbed to manage its anti-piracy team.

During his career at Nintendo, Flamm was responsible for a series of campaigns to protect the company from counterfeiting. According to popular game site Gamasutra, for instance, in July 1999 Flamm helped the US Customs Department confiscate more than $250,000 worth of illicit Pokemon toys, trading cards and games.

‘This is garbage,’ he told CBS at the time. ‘They sell crap. And these products are extremely unsafe. They're extremely low quality. And the consumers are getting ripped off by them.’

Then, in 2000, he actively sought to protect important Nintendo icons by preventing company brands from appearing on explicit websites.

Flamm stayed with the company through many generations. His tenure began in the days of the iconic Game Boy device and Super Nintendo Entertainment system and he successfully transitioned his team through the Nintendo DS, Wii and Nintendo 3DS eras, the game manufacturer says.
