John Spinnato, vice president of CSR for Sanofi US, once filled the general counsel position at the Paris-based pharmaceutical company. For 22 years, Spinnato managed all activities in the firm’s legal department and oversaw the US and Canadian pharmaceutical operations and consumer health business. In becoming head of CSR, Spinnato has made an interesting move. On the legal side, he sought to protect the company’s assets; now he utilizes these assets to create a sustainable business.
Sustainability is a major concern for companies. A decade ago, investors paid little attention to environmental and social issues but studies indicate that between 2002 and 2011 stakeholders concerned about these issues filed about 50 percent more shareholder proposals than in the past.
