HP promotes its deputy GC

John Schultz has been named executive vice president and general counsel of Hewlett Packard (HP).

Schultz, who joined the technology giant in 2008, will sit on HP's executive council and report to Meg Whitman, president and chief executive officer of the California-based company.

As general counsel, Schultz is responsible for all international legal and compliance functions. His previous role was vice president and deputy general counsel in charge of litigation, where he was tasked with managing all lawsuits filed against HP in the US.

Schultz is expected to replace David Healy, who has served as interim general counsel since December 2011. Healey is partner and co-chair of the mergers and acquisition group at Fenwick & West, a law firm that provides counsel to HP.  He advised HP on a number of important business issues.

Prior to joining HP, Schultz was a partner at Philadelphia-based law firm Morgan Lewis & Bockius. He has also worked for law firms Drinker Biddle & Reath and Latham & Watkins. He received his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and his Bachelor of Science from Albright College.
