Discovery Communications has promoted Savalle Sims to the newly created position of general counsel.

In her new, expanded role, Sims leads Discovery’s global legal teams, managing attorneys and all legal issues on behalf of the company in almost 20 offices worldwide. Previously deputy general counsel, she continues to report to Bruce Campbell, chief development, distribution and legal officer for Discovery Communications, and is based at the company’s headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The change became effective last week and Discovery’s board of directors is expected to formally approve Sims’ appointment as an executive officer in May. Discovery owns a range of television channels including Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet and Eurosport.

As deputy general counsel, Sims managed Discovery’s litigation and trademark legal teams, handling all legal efforts around the company’s intellectual property, including trademark, patent and copyright portfolios. Before that, she was senior vice president of litigation and intellectual property with the company. Before joining Discovery in 2011, she was a partner in the commercial litigation department at Arent Fox.

‘Savalle is a strong leader, with an incredible legal mind and strategic approach that has served Discovery exceptionally well,’ Campbell says. ‘She is the ideal choice to manage Discovery’s high-functioning legal team, supporting our complex global business.’
