Adtalem expands role for general counsel

Stephen Beard takes on COO responsibilities

NYSE-listed Adtalem Global Education has appointed Stephen Beard, senior vice president and the company’s general counsel, to the expanded position of COO and general counsel, effective last week.

Beard joined Adtalem in February 2018, overseeing the education provider’s global legal, governance, risk and security matters. In his expanded role, he now also leads the company’s strategy and innovation, corporate development and investor relations activities. In addition, he focuses on operational processes to align company initiatives and corporate development efforts with the needs of students and customers.

Before joining Adtalem, Beard was executive vice president, chief administrative officer and general counsel of Heidrick & Struggles International, where he led global legal operations for the company and oversaw various enterprise support functions, including strategy and corporate development.

Before that, he was in private practice with law firm Schiff Hardin in Chicago, where he was a member of the corporate and securities group, representing public and private companies on M&A, corporate finance, securities and corporate governance matters.

‘Since joining Adtalem, Steve has proven himself as an expert in legal, risk and governance areas, and as a highly valued adviser to our leadership team and board of directors,’ says Adtalem president and CEO Lisa Wardell in a statement. ‘His ability to thoughtfully navigate highly complex issues – combined with his bias for action in implementing solutions – will enable our team to drive revenue and profitability growth.’
