Albertsons recruits new top lawyer

Tom Moriarty was previously with CVS Health

NYSE-listed Albertsons Companies has recruited Tom Moriarty to become executive vice president and general counsel, effective June 5. He will report to CEO Vivek Sankaran.

Moriarty will join the food and drug retailer from CVS Health, where he spent more than a decade in increasingly senior roles including chief strategy officer, executive vice president for global pharma and, most recently, executive vice president, chief policy and external affairs officer and general counsel.

Moriarty oversaw all legal and regulatory functions within CVS Health, including its $78 bn acquisition of Aetna. He also led global pharmaceutical sourcing operations and was the company’s lead representative to the White House Covid-19 task force as CVS provided testing, vaccinations and other healthcare services.

Before his time at CVS Health, Moriarty spent 12 years at Medco Health Solutions where he held leadership roles in corporate strategy, legal affairs, global supply chain management and M&A. During his time at the company, he played a leading role in the merger with Express Scripts.

Juliette Pryor

Moriarty succeeds Juliette Pryor, who left Albertsons to join Lowe’s Companies as executive vice president, chief legal officer and corporate secretary on May 3. She succeeded Bill McCanless, who had been Lowe’s executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary since 2015. He advised the company last year of his intention to retire at the end of May.

Sankaran says in a statement: ‘Tom is a proven leader whose broad background and deep understanding of corporate and legal strategy make him a welcome addition to our talented leadership team. His experience leading high-performing teams and successfully implementing important strategic initiatives at top companies will be invaluable as we continue to execute on our ‘customers for life’ strategy.’
