Gordon Brothers hires new general counsel

Leslie Zmugg previously spent two decades at Caterpillar

A senior Caterpillar in-house counsel has left the equipment and engine manufacturer to join Boston-based Gordon Brothers, an advisory, restructuring and investment firm.

Leslie Zmugg is now general counsel at Gordon Brothers, leading the firm’s global legal function. She previously spent two decades at Caterpillar, most recently as general counsel and secretary for Cat Financial, the company’s financial services unit. In her new role she also serves as a strategic counsel and corporate adviser as part of the firm’s executive and investment committees.

Zmugg, who is based in Boston, succeeds Michael Chartock, who is launching a new litigation claims business at Gordon Brothers.

Before starting work at Caterpillar in 1999, Zmugg was an attorney with Kasowitz Benson & Torres and Schulte Roth & Zabel in New York. Her practice centered on asset-based finance, bankruptcy and corporate restructuring.

‘Leslie’s global perspective and experience in highly complex environments will strengthen our ability to rapidly execute for our clients to help them transform their businesses,’ says Ken Frieze, Gordon Brothers CEO, in a statement. ‘I look forward to her contributions toward evolving the firm as we continue to expand.’

Suzette Long is chief legal officer, general counsel and corporate secretary of Caterpillar. She joined the  construction and mining equipment manufacturer in 2004 as an attorney in the legal department. She later served in a series of senior corporate attorney positions and was named associate general counsel in 2011 before becoming deputy general counsel for the legal services division in 2013 and deputy general counsel leading the legal support for Caterpillar’s energy and transportation unit in 2015.
