New York Life promotes deputy to general counsel

Natalie Lamarque has been with the company since 2014

New York Life Insurance Company has promoted Natalie Lamarque to become senior vice president and general counsel.

Lamarque was previously deputy general counsel, charged with overseeing litigation and the legal responsibilities of the investment, asset management, technology and intellectual property areas at the company. She also chaired the New York Life privacy working group, an in-house think tank that acts as a resource for the company on privacy issues.

In her new role, Lamarque has day-to-day oversight of the office of the general counsel, which includes the insurance and agency, investments, corporate practice and tax teams. She also joins New York Life’s executive management committee and continues to report to chief legal officer (CLO) Sheila Davidson. Davidson previously served as CLO and general counsel, according to a spokesperson.

Lamarque joined New York Life in 2014 as an associate general counsel in the company’s litigation group. She was chief of staff to the CLO, leading legal programs in areas such as corporate governance, cyber-security, global anti-corruption and anti-money laundering, fraud prevention and internal investigations. She was also a member of the corporate compliance department, a role in which she supervised the sales practice review team, which included market surveillance, field review and handling customer complaints.

Before joining the mutual life insurance company, Lamarque was an assistant US attorney in the Southern District of New York. In that capacity she prosecuted federal crimes on matters such as racketeering, insurance fraud, money laundering, bank fraud, credit card fraud and identity theft.

Earlier in her career, she was an associate in the litigation department of law firm Debevoise & Plimpton, focusing on white-collar defense, anti-corruption and FCPA investigations.

‘Natalie’s distinguished track record in leadership roles, supported by her impressive career experiences and success in managing complex legal matters across New York Life’s business, are reflected in this key promotion,’ Davidson says in a statement. ‘The company will continue to benefit from her sound judgment and passion for the law.’
