CITGO hires new compliance and ethics chief

Steven Scarpino previously worked at BP

CITGO Petroleum Corporation has hired Steven Scarpino as the company’s new chief compliance and ethics officer.

Scarpino joins CITGO from BP, where he had been director for ethics and compliance in global programs since 2009. Before working at BP, he held director and managerial posts in the fields of compliance, privacy, CSR, business development and financial services, among others, at NCR Corporation, AT&T GIS and Greyhound Lines.

He reports directly to CITGO president and CEO Carlos Jordá and has direct reporting access to the board’s audit committee.

The position of chief compliance and ethics officer had previously been part of the responsibilities of Jack Lynch, vice president for legal and government affairs.

CITGO describes Scarpino’s appointment as the latest step in a company-wide effort to enhance ethics and corporate governance, having recently updated its code of business conduct and ethics and in late 2020 issued its first ESG report. Scarpino will continue promoting regulatory and legal compliance as well as what the company calls its ‘speak-up, listen-up, follow-up’ culture.

‘CITGO is committed to the highest standards of ethics, integrity and compliance – just as we are committed to excellence in operational performance,’ Jordá says in a statement. ‘Steven brings nearly two decades of leadership in corporate ethics and compliance, and we welcome him to this vitally important position at CITGO.’
