MSG owner hires general counsel

Scott Packman spent 12 years as general counsel with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp (MSG Entertainment) has hired Scott Packman as executive vice president and general counsel, effective today.

The position is a new one for MSG Entertainment as a result of it becoming a stand-alone company in April 2020 when The Madison Square Garden Company separated its sports and entertainment businesses through a spin-off transaction, a spokesperson says.

Packman’s career has involved working on business and legal issues in areas such as venture capital and private equity, intellectual property, financing and M&A. According to his LinkedIn profile, he was most recently managing member with SSP Partners, having previously been senior executive vice president, general counsel, chief strategy officer and head of business affairs for independent TV studio and distributor Sonar Entertainment.

Before that, Packman spent 14 years at MGM Holdings/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, owner of the MGM movie studio and film and TV library, where he held leadership roles including 12 years as general counsel and secretary overseeing all legal, business affairs, corporate governance and risk-management functions. During his time at MGM, he worked on a number of initiatives such as the company’s restructuring as well as investments in domestic and foreign joint ventures.

Packman began his legal career in private practice with Rogers & Wells and later O’Melveny & Myers.

In his new role, he is responsible for managing the MSG Entertainment legal affairs team, including all corporate, commercial, transactional, litigation, regulatory and day-to-day legal matters. He reports to executive chair and CEO Jim Dolan.

MSG Entertainment’s venues include New York’s Madison Square Garden, Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall and Beacon Theatre.

Dolan says in a statement: ‘We are pleased to welcome Scott to MSG Entertainment, where he brings with him decades of outstanding legal experience, particularly in the entertainment industry. His expertise and insights will be an asset as we continue to grow our company, including through our state-of-the-art MSG Sphere venues.’
