The one-time US Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia is set to oversee the healthcare teachnology provider's legal affairs
NASDAQ-listed healthcare technology provider Allscripts has tapped Kent Alexander to join the company’s executive leadership team and assume the role of executive vice president and general counsel.
In this position Alexander is responsible for all legal affairs, including employment-related matters, contracts, intellectual property and litigation. He joins Allscripts during a period of considerable growth: in June the company announced a merger with Chicago, Illinois-headquartered Eclipsys.
Announcing Alexander’s appointment, Allscripts chief executive Glen Tullman says: ‘His judgment and breadth of experience in healthcare will be critical as the company continues to expand our market presence, especially in light of our proposed merger with Eclipsys.’
Alexander is well prepared for the new challenges ahead: for the past 10 years he has held the title of senior vice president and general counsel at Emory University. In this role he oversaw not only the university’s legal affairs, but also those of its hospital system Emory Healthcare.
His past legal experience further includes a stint as US Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, a post to which former president Bill Clinton appointed him in 1994. He has also worked in private practice as a partner at the law firm King & Spalding, where he specialized in government and healthcare-related issues.
In addition to his day job, Alexander is active in the Atlanta, Georgia community. The Georgia governors have repeatedly nominated him for state pro-bono leadership posts, including a seat on the Georgia State Ethics Commission. Additionally, he was a recipient of the Department of Justice’s Volunteer Service Award and co-founded the not-for-profit organization, Hands On Atlanta.
Alexander received a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.
